Jim Vanderloo Named Interim Superintendent

Sioux City, Iowa – The Board of Directors for the Sioux City Community School District has named Jim Vanderloo as the District’s interim superintendent, effective February 26, 2026.

Vanderloo has served the District for the past 34 years, beginning his career as a special education history teacher at West Middle School in 1992. Since that time, he has held teaching and leadership positions at North High School, Woodrow Wilson Middle School, and West High School.

In 2011, Vanderloo began his current role as Director of Secondary Education and Activities, overseeing the District’s six high schools and middle schools, the Sioux City Career Academy, and all athletic and fine arts programs across the District’s secondary level. Under Vanderloo’s leadership, freshmen houses were created in each of the high schools, the teaming concept was implemented in the middle schools, and the Career Academy opened and then expanded to the District’s Harry Hopkins campus.

Vanderloo earned his bachelor’s degree in special education and physical education at Morningside University and master’s degrees in educational administration and physical education – athletic administration from the University of South Dakota. He also holds an educational specialist degree in educational administration – school district superintendent, also from the University of South Dakota.

“Jim has an impressive track record serving Sioux City Community Schools in his long career. He has the experience and passion for our schools that is needed to ensure we continue advancing our mission,” says Jan George, President of the Sioux City Community School District Board of Directors. “We congratulate Jim on his new role as interim superintendent and look forward to working with him to continue the District’s rich tradition of educational excellence.”

Vanderloo’s appointment is contingent on the finalization of the hiring process and board approval of his contract. The contract will be effective through June 30, 2026, with the Board’s option to renew through the 2026-2027 school year as it conducts a comprehensive search for a permanent superintendent.
